This reminds me very strongly of Pan's Labyrinth. Beautiful - I think centring the hole might be an interesting experiment.

Absolutely, Pan's Labyrinth and Alice in Wonderland instantly crossed my mind too. Shall we follow the white rabbit (or the faun) and explore the land beyond or should we stay (seemingly) save at this side of the hole? But then again, which side are we at!?
